What a great capture and story of this little Cooper's Hawk. Doesn''t sound like they were model parents for this youngster. v1/fv

Greg Allore replied:

I guess you could say they were emotionally detached. lol Thanks for looking and supporting.

Artist's Description

This past summer, I was privileged to have a nesting pair of Cooper's Hawks (Accipiter cooperii) living in a tree in my front yard. I called the male Blazer, and the Female I called Ranger. I rarely saw the female, since she stayed in the nest most of the time, while the smaller male did most of the hunting, usually lizards and smaller birds.

They had two babies, this is one of them. Just days out of the nest, I heard it calling out for it's parents, but they had already left the area. I do believe they were still around, I sometimes heard Blazer's call, and they would occasionally fly by with a food drop, but they had no real hand in teaching the young how to fly or hunt.
